Many times with Windows Operating Systems, problems occur after an application, utility or patch is installed. Often the problem may not be found until you perform a function or action such as right clicking a folder or file, making it more difficult to fix. One way to quickly cure slow right click problems is to isolate the program using a free tool called ShellExView.
ShellExView from NirSoft can do more than fix slow right click problems since the tool can display all installed shell extensions. For the purpose of this tutorial, I'll show you how to use ShellExView to help isolate and identify the cause of a misbehaving context menu handler.
What is a context menu handler? It's a shell extension that adds functionality to context menus when you right click a file or folder and a menu appears. Examples are paste, copy, cut, open with, share, etc. When programs such as Zip utilities or Ant-Virus applications are installed, you will also see additional options added to the context menu, as shown in the screen shot below with AVG Antivirus application installed:
Since context menu handlers can be added to the registry in several different areas, ShellExView easily identifies these areas, and lets you disable all programs or one at a time, which removes the option from the context menu, allowing you test and identify the cause.
To get started, first download ShellExView. No installation is required and the tool can be run by double clicking on shexview.exe.
(NOTE: On Windows Vista launch the program as an administrator by right clicking shexview.exe and select Run as Administrator) After a few seconds, ShellExView will open and display all shell extensions installed on your Computer.
A you can see it is a very detailed list. But don't let that scare you off. To find the context menu handlers, sort the Type column, so the context menu handlers are displayed together.
If I suspected AVG Anitivrus was the culprit, just right click on AVG7 Shell Extension Class and select disable or highlight and press F7 and answer Yes to disable.
Now when I right click on a folder or file, the Scan with AVG option will be gone for the context menu and if AVG was the problem, right clicking will be faster.
NOTE: If the Scan with AVG option is still present, you will need to reboot for the change to take effect.
If disabling AVG7 Shell Extension Class did not fix the problem, then enable AVG7 Shell Extension Class and disable another non-Microsoft context menu handler and repeat the above steps until the problem is solved.
If there are many, disable in groups, 3 or 4 context menu handlers to help isolate the problem faster. If the problem goes away, enable one at a time (in the group) until you find the offending application.
ShellExView provides lots of information, and you can also scroll to the right and look at the File Extension or File Created Time columns to help narrow down where the problem may reside, or view the properties of an Extension name.
After you have found the problem, try uninstalling the program and see if the problem fixes itself. If not, contact the vendor for support.
ShellExView is a great tool to have around when there are odd problems. Best of all it is free!

nicely *lifted* article
Hi, I have installed version 1.18 to correct windows explorer crashing when I boot-up the computer. I believe this is a start-up problem.
Recently, I have disabled the shell extension of Google Toolbar to see if the problem fixes itself.
However, after running the computer for a couple of days, the windows explorer problem appears again.
Therefore, I presume that the shell extension of Google Toolbar is not the offending application.
I now wish to re-enable it, but I do not seem to find it in ShellExView.
I shall be very grateful if you could provide me guidance on how to recover it.
Any help given is very much appreciated
Thanks a lot
ok
i've got context menu items that are not in the list! specifically EDIT WITH ARANESE.
any ideas?
thanks one day I hope to be as smart as you
Worked perfect. Thank you very much for the tip.
Well thanks for this bit of info…yet again Roxio causes another problem. First with Dreamscene and with the context menu. All better now. Thanks. Quick and easy fix
Thanks! It was a problem with the Utimaco "SafeGuard Private Disk extension" that is installed per default on Lenovo T60-laptops. I disabled it and all is back to normal.
Thanks man!
I found that I didn't need any of the extra junk that was in my right-click. 😉
Now I don't have to wait 30 seconds for it to respond!
Thanks again. 🙂
@Mike
Cool, glad it worked out for you and fixed the problem.
HEY it works PERFECTLY…
the cause is because of my WINRAR…
now it works like normal agian!!
Adobe Elements was the culprit for me. Thanks for this tool!
For me it was MOZYHOme Remote Backup Shell
My right click is only slow for the desktop and items on the desktop. Once in another folder or program it works fine
I did the ShellExView program with no luck
MOZYHOme Remote Backup Shell was and is causing my problems.
Same problem with the Utimaco "SafeGuard Private Disk extension" on my Thinkpad. Thanks to NirSoft and wtn.
Hi, can anyone help, my right click menu is really slow, since i have installed roxio creator 2009, it has added a "convert audio files" to my context menu, now i have used ShellExView, but i cant seem to find this particular menu item, i tried to disable all roxio entrys that i could find, restarted my machine ,but right clicking still takes so long.

EASY FIX FOR RIGHT-CLICK PROBLEMS STEP BY STEP HERE:
[specifically explorer freezing up/hanging when you right click the C: drive icon].
it was time consuming but it works!
However, I was not one of the lucky ones, my problem ended up being THREE FILES and not just one, so it was a bit frustrating but I did finally isolate the 3 files and disabled them and the problem is GONE!

:smile:STEP 1: Download and run ShellExView [it's free], place it on your desktop, you're going to be going back and forth to it about 30 times
:smile:DOWNLOAD SHELLEXVIEW HERE:
http://www.soft32.com/Download/Free/ShellExView/4-76225-1.html
:smile:STEP 2: When you get into the program, see the list of files, you are going to see some that are shaded in a really light pink shading so light it's unnoticeable and if Bob hadn't mentioned it, I would not have noticed the shading [thanx Bob]. Each one is marked "no," meaning they are not disabled.
:smile:STEP 3: Disable all of the ones in the LIGHT PINK shading, to disable them click on each one and then click on the GREEN BUTTON above - or manually change it by clicking FILE and then DISABLE. If they're in groups you can select and change them in groups when possible. When all the light shaded pink ones are disabled [marked "YES"] then REBOOT
:smile:STEP 4: Now test your right click and it should work, you'll get happy…but don't get too happy, because now comes the tedious part: the process of elimination
:smile:STEP 5: Go back into ShellExView and select 5 or 10 of the files shaded in the light pink that you previously disabled and now enable them [change them back to "no"]. I found it easier to start from the top and work my way up to the bottom] Close out of ShellExView and REBOOT.
:smile:STEP 6: Now TEST your right click,, if it works then keep them as is and go to the next group and repeat step 5 & 6. If your test fails then you've isolated the file and you'll have to CONTROL/ALT/DELETE to TASK MANAGER and REBOOT and then go back into ShellExView and disable that bad one.
:smile:STEP 7: If you think you got the bad one then enable all the others and leave the bad one DISABLED and you're done.
NOTE: Be aware it could be more than one file, although most of the posts I read online about this problem it was only one file, but for me it was 3 problematic files.
TIP: It works best if you do not change the view type so you can keep your place, and write down each one you changed and mark it as "ok," otherwise you might get mixed up [like I did trying to do it from memory].
******************************************************************
[b]ADDITIONAL NOTES: Bobwheel2 is right, when you go into the ShellExView program it runs and it highlights problem files in a real light pink shade that's not really noticeable unless you're looking for it (thanks Bob) then you can go into OPTIONS and make sure everything has a check mark except for "file by extension type" - I think this is how it is by default. Then after that it's just a matter of process of elimination. There's ways to view it and I kept mine on TYPE. It was a bit of a nightmare rebooting after checking each one (I had to reboot about 30+ times) but what made my "adventure" a nightmare is I was looking for only 1 problematic file - but it turned out I have 3 problematic files all stemming from an old zip drive I installed 5 years ago and no longer use:
1. IomegaShell system
2. Iomega context menu
3. Copy disk - Iomega
I also found out by about the 20-25th reboot, my computer got really slow booting up so it's good to do a CCleaner and a registry repair and optimization after the 20th or 25th or so reboot [I rebooted so many times I lost count].
Anyway, just in case anyone has this same problem with their right-click on their C: drive and have no idea what to do, I just thought I'd let you know how I fixed mine, and I am not experienced in computers. How my computer got this I think had something to do with adding new programs. I can't pin it down because I was also eliminating lots of files at the same time to to make room on my hard drive.
Here's the programs I used to run CClean and registry repair, you don't have to have them to fix your right-click, but since I mentioned them above, thought I'd reference them:
Ref:
CCleaner: free download
http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
Advanced Registry Repair: free trial, but will only repair the 1st 20 files free, you have to pay $29 for the rest to be optimized.

Thanks again!

just wanted to update the above post. you do not need to pay for a registry cleaner
ccleaner has a built in reg cleaner that works just as good as any paid cleaners, or you can go to the comodo website and download their free reg cleaner which i use all the time. while you're at it, if you still use windows firewall, now would be a good time to pick up comodos free firewall as well!
Many thanks for this post ! It was just what I was looking for - my system is up and running again. Great, very great.
My problem :
- I have Vista Home Premium. This morning, I have installed IIS7 and I remove some old installs (Gears of Wars, 7Zip, …). I also ran some portable applications from my USB Key (ISO mounnting applications). Then, I reboot and - suprise - right clicking on any file in Windows Explorer was very very slow. A process, NT Kernel & System, was doing a lot of things every time I clicked - don't know what it was doing and don't know why it was doing this.
- Reading your post, I downloaded ShellExView and it tooked my an hour or so to disable/test/enable every entries. Doing that, I found one error : a link to Kasperky - a portable version that I once installed on an USB key. After disabling it, I was able to right click on most of the files. But not all of them : .zip, .rar and .iso were still very slow.
- I then downloaded CCleaner (cited by one of your reader) and I run it (just the registry part). I asked it to correct every thing and… suprise again, it works !
Great post.
Thanks
It is working normally now .
Thanks once again
Thanks for this.
It turned out to be that blasted SecuROM Context Menu handler causing problems on my Vista install. It was causing a good 30 seconds pause on a NAS file.
thanx man, it works
Nice one, it fixed my problem… tune up shredder was the culprit! Thanks for the help
brilliant…you have saved me half of my day with the shellexview!!!!!! thanks!! i'm sooo happy! ¦)…
Great! took me all of 5 minutes to fix my problem… Thank you!!
Hi, Just to say that I found shellview on another site and thought it was awful HOWEVER, I also found it on this site and thought it was fantastic. Article excellent with great instructions. Very happy and thank you very much. A lot off my mind as I was considering a re-install!!!
Works like a charm. Thanks a lot 🙂
SWEET!!!! Works like a charm!!!! I just disabled everything n enable them 1 by 1 & i foundout what was causing the prob!!!! thnx dude!!!!
Hi there. This guide OMG.. Thank you soooooooooo Much. I have my right click back to full speed.
Excellent advice! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
many many thanks it works perfectly, when i disable the graphicsshellext class (igfxpph module) my systems back to normal. yahoooooo thanks again
I have 2 items from NAV that I can not disable and which seem to be causing my right click problem which brings up a MS error report box.
Any ideas on how to disable those items?
Thanks.
g8, took me about 10 minitues to solve my problem. Thanks
Great advise disabled all except windows , rebooted the enabled one at time till it locked up , disabled this item and enabled all others , rebooted and all ok now. thanks for advice.
80% of these delays are in fact due a strange problem, when the action tries first to do a network connection (usually to network stations no longer avaiable).
First try unplugging the network connection and if this solves this delays, try WireShark, start it when you right-click and it will show you the problem, then delete this entry from registry and voila!
Thank you boss..thank you so much.
It really took me out from the trouble i was facing.
Rukky (From New Delhi, India)
great tool
Wish I had found this sooner. I have wasted hours for right click to come up, and hours researching to find a solution. This took me 5 minutes to find the culprit.
@MoniQue: Hi - i found changes were not instant, but logging out of my profile and logging back in worked!
I'm pretty sure it was a Roxio 'burn to cd' thing my blackberry desktop program installed! So instead of rebooting, try logging out (Windows 7 Prof).
I have been trying to fix this problem for years, and finally a solution that works! Turned out in my case to be WinZip7.0. This is a fairly old version. Does anyone that has do this exercise know if a newer version no longer causes this problem?
Many thanks to the author of this program.
Now, for the harder question. This process totally fixed the context menu slowdown. However there is a second slowdown just as annoying. I can now do a RMB on a shared folder on my home network, and the context menu comes up quickly. I then open that same folder, which also is fast. Then I select a file, even a 100kb or less file, and drag it to my desktop and that same old delay is back. This only happens on the first file. Doesn't really matter how big it is. Anyone know if there is a similar fix out there to solve this problem as well?
Thanks again,
gm
solved my problem, great tip, wish I had searched for the solution earlier 😉
Worked like a charm. Took me maybe 10 minutes to locate and disable. Now, it's responds immediately!! Thank you!!!!
@MoniQue: I know its a little late but thank you MoniQue you helped me out there. :)x
@pumuklee: That helped me out so much! Thanks for you tip!
Many thanks for this great tool.
The culprit was for me Mozy Backup. I did not need to spend a lot of time to find; I just disable the last four programs I installed befor the problems started.
Thanks a million.
John
THANK YOU so less to do and solved the problem
thanks a lot man!!!!!
i was thinking to re-install my windows.
fortunately, i found this site!
Thanks a lot!!! Notepad++ made me mad.

precious info simply shared among us.
@lucero
Glad to help out and keep on rocking!
Thanks so much for this tip. I used it to speed up my crappy Vista work machine, which is VERY sluggish. I'll write a post about this post on my blog. Cheers!
I have suffered this problem for along time
and now i have corrected this problem

My computer Right-Click was fast dramatically…
@@ Thank for good Tips…
Thank you so very much for a beautifully simple solution that worked immediately!
hmm, when i "disable" or "enable" the context menu items from ShellExView, it doesn't seem to take effect right away. Do I need to do something to trigger it? [more details: Even though in ShellExView the items say "disabled" right away without problem, I still see that they are enabled when I right click on files… After 5-10 minutes the disabling finally kicked in. Not sure if I did anything meaningful in the meantime (i certainly did NOT reboot, as I was starting to wonder if that was necessary). My slow right-click was fixed (yeah!), but now I want to re-enable items a few at a time, but again, even though ShellExView says they're enabled, the items do NOT yet appear in my right-clicks. It's been more than an hour now so I'm not sure what's up. Any thoughts?]
@riemann1234
Try rebooting and see if that fixes the problem with items not appearing when right clicking.
thanks.. yeah i was hoping to avoid having to reboot with each change (since the strategy is to add or delete items one by one to try and narrow down the culprit).. it seems from previous posters that they get the changes to take effect quickly. i'm sure i'm missing something simple…
So I ended up using "log off" my Win 7 system (and logging back on) as a way to get the changes to take effect.. about 30 seconds total. Anyway, after a few such cycles, narrowed it down to the single culprit for my slow right-click problems.. looks like it was NVIDIA (and NOT Norton or Mozy eg):
extension name: OpenGLShExt Class
Type: Context Menu
Description: NVIDIA Shell Extensions
Product Name: NVIDIA Shell Extensions
Filename: C:\Windows\system32\nv3dappshext.dll
Thanks!
Wow it worked! In my case, WinRAR's the culprit. This is such a very nice tool. Thanks a lot!
thank you
I downloaded the Shexview.exe and disabled all pink items of type "Context Menu". I've also disabled "Automatically search for network folders and printers" in the Folder Options > View.
I still have this problem… the delay is apparent on files, folders and applications… for example - right-clicking on an email in Outlook…. I'm getting desperate… and other ideas?
Thanx very much for the info. Nero Cover Designer was the context menu culprit.
Thanks issue fixed nice to have my right click working fast again.
Thank you very much, easy to follow instructions. A problem that was sending me crazy for days has been fixed in about 10 miniuts.
Worked well Thanks
Turned out to be Moo right clicker
Didn't work after sp3 install
I'Ve disable all non-Microsoft program in the contexte menu… and all in pink in all the list of shellexview, but right click stil isn't working… and i don't know enough of Windows to say what program from Microsoft is vital… Any other way? am i doing something that isn't right? I have Windows 8 too…
Disabled all the non microsoft menu context programs still didn't work even re-installed Windows 7 about 3 days ago and i still have the issue… -.-
Informative comments . I was fascinated by the details . Does anyone know where my assistant might access a template IRS Instruction 2553 form to use ?
