the solution for me:
i disabled all the context menus
after that i goes one by one and i enabled the context menus
and finally i enable all the context menus
and now its working

maybe just need to restart this context menus

Hi, I have installed version 1.18 to correct windows explorer crashing when I boot-up the computer. I believe this is a start-up problem.
Recently, I have disabled the shell extension of Google Toolbar to see if the problem fixes itself.
However, after running the computer for a couple of days, the windows explorer problem appears again.
Therefore, I presume that the shell extension of Google Toolbar is not the offending application.
I now wish to re-enable it, but I do not seem to find it in ShellExView.
I shall be very grateful if you could provide me guidance on how to recover it.

Thanks! It was a problem with the Utimaco "SafeGuard Private Disk extension" that is installed per default on Lenovo T60-laptops. I disabled it and all is back to normal.

For me it was MOZYHOme Remote Backup Shell

My right click is only slow for the desktop and items on the desktop. Once in another folder or program it works fine

I did the ShellExView program with no luck

Hi, can anyone help, my right click menu is really slow, since i have installed roxio creator 2009, it has added a "convert audio files" to my context menu, now i have used ShellExView, but i cant seem to find this particular menu item, i tried to disable all roxio entrys that i could find, restarted my machine ,but right clicking still takes so long.

[b]However, I was not one of the lucky ones, my problem ended up being THREE FILES and not just one, so it was a bit frustrating but I did finally isolate the 3 files and disabled them and the problem is GONE!

:smile:[b]STEP 1: Download and run ShellExView [it's free], place it on your desktop, you're going to be going back and forth to it about 30 times [/b]

:smile:DOWNLOAD SHELLEXVIEW HERE:

:smile:[b]STEP 2: When you get into the program, see the list of files, you are going to see some that are shaded in a really light pink shading[/b] so light it's unnoticeable and if Bob hadn't mentioned it, I would not have noticed the shading [thanx Bob]. Each one is marked "no," meaning they are not disabled.
:smile:[b]STEP 3: Disable all of the ones in the LIGHT PINK shading[/b], to disable them click on each one and then click on the GREEN BUTTON above - or manually change it by clicking FILE and then DISABLE. If they're in groups you can select and change them in groups when possible. [b]When all the light shaded pink ones are disabled [marked "YES"] then REBOOT[/b]
:smile:[b]STEP 4: Now test your right click and it should work, [/b]you'll get happy…but don't get too happy, because [b]now comes the tedious part: the process of elimination[/b]
:smile:[b]STEP 5: Go back into ShellExView and select 5 or 10 of the files shaded in the light pink that you previously disabled and now enable them [change them back to "no"]. [/b]I found it easier to start from the top and work my way up to the bottom] [b]Close out of ShellExView and REBOOT.[/b]
:smile:[b]STEP 6: Now TEST your right click,[/b], if it works then keep them as is and go to the next group and repeat step 5 & 6. If your test fails then you've isolated the file and you'll have to CONTROL/ALT/DELETE to TASK MANAGER and REBOOT and then go back into ShellExView and disable that bad one.
:smile:[B]STEP 7: If you think you got the bad one then enable all the others and leave the bad one DISABLED and you're done. [/B]

[U]NOTE:[/U] Be aware it could be more than one file, although most of the posts I read online about this problem it was only one file, but for me it was 3 problematic files.

[U][b]TIP: [/U]It works best if you do not change the view type[/b] so you can keep your place, and [b]write down each one you changed and mark it as "ok,"[/b] otherwise you might get mixed up [like I did trying to do it from memory].

[[U]b]ADDITIONAL NOTES:[/U] [/b]Bobwheel2 is right, when you go into the ShellExView program it runs and it highlights problem files in a real light pink shade that's not really noticeable unless you're looking for it (thanks Bob) then you can go into OPTIONS and make sure everything has a check mark except for "file by extension type" - I think this is how it is by default. Then after that it's just a matter of process of elimination. There's ways to view it and I kept mine on TYPE. It was a bit of a nightmare rebooting after checking each one (I had to reboot about 30+ times) but what made my "adventure" a nightmare is I was looking for only 1 problematic file - [b]but it turned out I have 3 problematic files all stemming from an old zip drive I installed 5 years ago and no longer use:

1. IomegaShell system
2. Iomega context menu
3. Copy disk - Iomega[/b]

I also found out by about the 20-25th reboot, my computer got really slow booting up so it's good to do a CCleaner and a registry repair and optimization after the 20th or 25th or so reboot [I rebooted so many times I lost count].

Anyway, just in case anyone has this same problem with their right-click on their C: drive and have no idea what to do, I just thought I'd let you know how I fixed mine, and I am not experienced in computers. How my computer got this I think had something to do with adding new programs. I can't pin it down because I was also eliminating lots of files at the same time to to make room on my hard drive.

Here's the programs I used to run CClean and registry repair, you don't have to have them to fix your right-click, but since I mentioned them above, thought I'd reference them:

just wanted to update the above post. you do not need to pay for a registry cleaner

ccleaner has a built in reg cleaner that works just as good as any paid cleaners, or you can go to the comodo website and download their free reg cleaner which i use all the time. while you're at it, if you still use windows firewall, now would be a good time to pick up comodos free firewall as well!

My problem :

- I have Vista Home Premium. This morning, I have installed IIS7 and I remove some old installs (Gears of Wars, 7Zip, …). I also ran some portable applications from my USB Key (ISO mounnting applications). Then, I reboot and - suprise - right clicking on any file in Windows Explorer was very very slow. A process, NT Kernel & System, was doing a lot of things every time I clicked - don't know what it was doing and don't know why it was doing this.

- Reading your post, I downloaded ShellExView and it tooked my an hour or so to disable/test/enable every entries. Doing that, I found one error : a link to Kasperky - a portable version that I once installed on an USB key. After disabling it, I was able to right click on most of the files. But not all of them : .zip, .rar and .iso were still very slow.

- I then downloaded CCleaner (cited by one of your reader) and I run it (just the registry part). I asked it to correct every thing and… suprise again, it works !

It turned out to be that blasted SecuROM Context Menu handler causing problems on my Vista install. It was causing a good 30 seconds pause on a NAS file.

Great advise disabled all except windows , rebooted the enabled one at time till it locked up , disabled this item and enabled all others , rebooted and all ok now. thanks for advice.

80% of these delays are in fact due a strange problem, when the action tries first to do a network connection (usually to network stations no longer avaiable).
First try unplugging the network connection and if this solves this delays, try WireShark, start it when you right-click and it will show you the problem, then delete this entry from registry and voila!

Wish I had found this sooner. I have wasted hours for right click to come up, and hours researching to find a solution. This took me 5 minutes to find the culprit.

@MoniQue: Hi - i found changes were not instant, but logging out of my profile and logging back in worked!
I'm pretty sure it was a Roxio 'burn to cd' thing my blackberry desktop program installed! So instead of rebooting, try logging out (Windows 7 Prof).

I have been trying to fix this problem for years, and finally a solution that works! Turned out in my case to be WinZip7.0. This is a fairly old version. Does anyone that has do this exercise know if a newer version no longer causes this problem?

Now, for the harder question. This process totally fixed the context menu slowdown. However there is a second slowdown just as annoying. I can now do a RMB on a shared folder on my home network, and the context menu comes up quickly. I then open that same folder, which also is fast. Then I select a file, even a 100kb or less file, and drag it to my desktop and that same old delay is back. This only happens on the first file. Doesn't really matter how big it is. Anyone know if there is a similar fix out there to solve this problem as well?

hmm, when i "disable" or "enable" the context menu items from ShellExView, it doesn't seem to take effect right away. Do I need to do something to trigger it? [more details: Even though in ShellExView the items say "disabled" right away without problem, I still see that they are enabled when I right click on files… After 5-10 minutes the disabling finally kicked in. Not sure if I did anything meaningful in the meantime (i certainly did NOT reboot, as I was starting to wonder if that was necessary). My slow right-click was fixed (yeah!), but now I want to re-enable items a few at a time, but again, even though ShellExView says they're enabled, the items do NOT yet appear in my right-clicks. It's been more than an hour now so I'm not sure what's up. Any thoughts?]

thanks.. yeah i was hoping to avoid having to reboot with each change (since the strategy is to add or delete items one by one to try and narrow down the culprit).. it seems from previous posters that they get the changes to take effect quickly. i'm sure i'm missing something simple…

So I ended up using "log off" my Win 7 system (and logging back on) as a way to get the changes to take effect.. about 30 seconds total. Anyway, after a few such cycles, narrowed it down to the single culprit for my slow right-click problems.. looks like it was NVIDIA (and NOT Norton or Mozy eg):

I downloaded the Shexview.exe and disabled all pink items of type "Context Menu". I've also disabled "Automatically search for network folders and printers" in the Folder Options > View.

I still have this problem… the delay is apparent on files, folders and applications… for example - right-clicking on an email in Outlook…. I'm getting desperate… and other ideas?
