I have recently added a second hard drive to my Computer because my first drive was running out of disk space. I usually save everything to "My Documents" and now want to move the folder to the new hard drive. How can I move the folder and it's contents?
This is usually one of the first tasks I do when I build a new Computer with Windows installed. Moving the My Documents folder to another hard drive or partition keeps the System partition from running out of disk space and isolates the folder if I need to reinstall Windows without losing any personal data stored in the folder.
The default location of My Documents folder is located at C:\Documents and Settings\X\My Documents, where "X" is the name of the user. Two methods can be used to move the folder:
First Method:
1) Open My Computer.
2) Right click on My Documents and from the sub-menu select properties.
3) Change the target folder path and Apply.
Second Method:
1) Open My Computer.
2) Right click on My Documents present and from the sub-menu select Cut
3) Navigate to the location where you want to save the folder, right click and select Paste.
If you only have one hard disk installed in your Computer and it is set up with one partition, you will not be able to move the folder to free up disk space. Tools do exist to create additional partitions after Windows has been installed, but if you are having disk space problems, adding a second hard drive will allow you to move the folder and free up disk space.

Check Word to make sure it is pointing to the new location where you moved My Documents on the D:\ drive. Refer to this article for changing the default save location in Word:

I was wondering how to change the default location of the document and settings folder to a different drive on windows XP. The idea is that whenever a new profile is created it defaults to the other drive instead of C:
@Patrick
The simplest method is to create a user profile and customize it as required. See the following article from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319974
NOTE: Before overwriting the default user profile template, it is a advisable to make a backup copy of the default user profile.
Okay, I have 2 hard drives, and I'm trying to install sims but it keeps trying to install on hard drive C:, how do I change the target drive? So when it downloads it ownloads on hard drive D:
@Karina
I'll need a little more info. What is "sims"?
You need to change the target or install directory during the install. Normally you have to go into advanced install or when it gives you an option for the type of install click on the one for advanced users. Then when the directory comes up just press change and set it to the directory u want.
Hope that helps
Changing the MyDocument location from properties may help, but your outlook will store your *.pst files in system drive (C:). And any new users created will also be created in the default location.
The best way is to change the Profile Directory in registry. So far I have tried it on a new installation (WinXP). U can figure out a way to do so on an existing installation. This is how:
* When installing a new system make more than one user.
* After you have installed just the OS, login into user1 and run regedit.exe
* go to the following registry entry: * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
* Take a backup of this by exporting it to C:\
* Change the value of ProfilesDirectory to "D:\Documents and Settings" or whatever u want
* Logout and log into user2. It will then prepare the profile of user2 in the new location.
*From the users accounts in control panel delete user1 and then recreate it, so that all the new settings will be created in the new location.
This will use the new location as the default location for all data related to any user.
There u go 🙂
