Are you still searching for jobs using the old method? You know, going to each site such as Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com and spending all day looking for something….any job?
If you answered yes, then stop searching the hard way, and start searching smarter by making the jobs come to you using RSS feeds and Google Reader.
RSS is short for Really Simple Syndication. It works in reverse with how you are used to finding information on the Internet. Instead of using search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, or visiting webs sites, forums, blogs, etc, you can subscribe to the sites feed (known as syndication) and make the information come to you.
These feeds make it easy for the visitor to see what sites have new content without having to actually visit the site, and save you a lot of surfing time.
To view RSS feeds, you need to use an application called a reader. There are many readers available, such as Google Reader. Firefox and Internet Explorer can also be used as an RSS reader, as well as popular Email providers, such as Yahoo Mail also include an RSS reader.
So how do you combine RSS and a Reader to search for a job?
Let's search for a job in the IT field for a System Administrator at Indeed.com and add the search feed to Google Reader.
After entering the search parameters, click on Find Jobs.
When the results page is displayed, look for the RSS Feed link just above the first search result and click on it.
At the next screen, since we will add the feed to Google Reader, you can just click on the Subscribe Now button, or use the pull down arrow to select another reader that is available.
On the next page, select Add To Google Reader to add the feed to your reader. At this point you can either add the feed to any existing folder or create a New Folder.
Some sites may not have an RSS link or the familiar RSS icon, such as Dice.com which uses the XML icon shown below:
Note: On Dice.com search result page, the XML icon can be found at the top of the left navigation bar.
The great thing about using RSS feeds, it keeps your inbox from being cluttered and is much easier to keep track of new jobs listings since they are dated and Google Reader will list the number of unread items for each feed.
Once you get organized and have everything set up, the time you saved can be better used…like subscribing and reading great Computer and Internet Tips from Watching The Net RSS Feed !
