No matter how hard you try, sooner or later keeping your bookmarks in Firefox organized, never remain that way. Eventually the time comes when you need to but them back in order only to find a mess and duplicate bookmarks all over the place. Fortunately cleaning up bookmarks can be quick using the Bookmark Duplicate Detector add-on.
Once Bookmark Duplicate Detector add-on is installed, additions to the menus will appear under Bookmarks \ Search for duplicates:
and under Tools:
A Shortcut is also added to the Bookmark Manager toolbar.
Starting with Tools \ BookmarkDD Options you can configure and change the default settings as needed in the Options tab or change the notifications and automatic bookmark deletions in the Duplicate tab. The Backup tab allows you to create a backup of your Firefox bookmarks before you start deleting duplicate bookmarks.
To delete duplicates, click Bookmarks \ Search for duplicates. The Manage duplicate bookmarks window will appear and display all duplicates. Selecting each duplicate will show you the folder locations of the URL (bottom) and allow you to select which folder you want to delete the duplicate from by clicking Remove.
As you surf the Internet and bookmark web site pages, any duplicates that are detected will pop up with a Confirm window asking you to OK, Move to another folder or Cancel.
When the time comes for cleaning up your bookmarks, adding Bookmark Duplicate Detector is one tool that will speed up the process as you get organized. For help with other bookmark management, check out how to locate missing Firefox bookmarks you knew existed somewhere!
Comments on Delete Duplicate Bookmarks In Firefox With BookmarkDD Add-on
That's pretty cool. I had about 20 duplicates and didn't even know it. Thanks.
When I run the duplicate, it does not remove all
duplicates. Needs more fine tuning.
It works .I found around 200 in my list.
LOL - I had 683 duplicates out of 7944 bookmarks!
when are they going to make one for version 3
Richard
Hopefully soon. There are a lot of comments (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1553)from people asking the same question.
Thank you for this great add-on.
I find it very useful, but it lacks some features that would make it just perfect.
When you have more than 100 duplicates (my case, for instance) it's pretty tedious to remove all of them one by one clicking on the duplicate, selecting what to remove and then pressing the remove button.
It would be much better if the plugin would show an icon on the right of each duplicate entry to remove it in one click. Doing this could remove the duplicate from the list and focus in the next duplicate, and removing the whole list would be easier and faster.
An option automatically remove duplicates would be great too. Some of us don't care where the duplicates are, so adding a one-button feature to remove all the duplicates leaving only one copy of the bookmark would be fine.
I hope you find these suggestions useful. Thanks again for the hard work in this excellent extension.
Oh, I'm sorry! I commented here thinking it was the author's site. Please remove my previous comment.
I used this Addon until Firefox implemented its own duplicate detection. Unfortunately, it turns out Firefox's built-in thing doesn't work so well. Over the past year or so, I've somehow managed to accumulate 1350 duplicates. So I re-installed BookmarksDD, but even with this tool, it will take me a week to clean up the mess. I sure wish there was an option to just automatically delete all but one of each duplicate. Otherwise, and excellent tool.
Bookmark Duplicate Decector / BookmarkDD is an useless tool.
It CANNOT remove duplicates ( automatically ).
Databases can provide you with a wealth of sources to examine, and some of them are even keyword searchable. ,
I downloaded and installed the latest version of the add-on. It listed what I assume are duplicates, suggests that there are about 1500 duplicates, and lists many urls, each with a number (between 2 and 26) before it, but selecting any of these does not yield any folders in the lower box. I'm using Firefox 3.6. Is there something you can suggest?
Thanks

Is there such tools for removing duplicated tabs witch contain some urls automatically.
I found a way to fasten up duplicate removal!
NOTE: This will mess up any hierarchy you may have built with bookmarks in separate folders, but - hey, at least there are no duplicates left.
First, change the settings in its control-panel, in menu go
-> Tools -> BookmarksDD Options -> Tab "Options" : Miscellaneous = "Silently discard duplicate bookmark"
Next Tab "Duplicate" : Deselect "Ask confirmation before deleting duplicate bookmark."
Press OK
Next, in menu, go
-> Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks…
Write the letters "http" in the search box in the upper right corner (Without the exclamation "" marks)
Suddenly you have found all your bookmarks!
Click one time in the result list to select one of the bookmarks and then enter the key combination [CTRL] + [X] to cut them all out.
Now, select (click on) a folder to the right, preferably "Bookmarks Menu" then enter the key combination [CTRL] + [V] to paste them all back in.
What happens? Silently all the duplicates will be discarded and your are left with only unique bookmarks.
DO NOT FORGET - IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG - [CTRL]+[Z] REGRETS YOUR LAST MOVE!
Happy tidy Friday!

Yeah, I meant quotation marks, not exclamation marks, but still, I guess you get the idea… …Fast Fingered Mike
