wordpress-logo.pngIf you manage a Blog on Wordpress than I'm sure there have been a few times you attempted to log on, only to completely blank out and forget your password. Or maybe you just changed your password and never wrote it down or saved it.

Fortunately it's not the end of the world, and changing your password in Wordpress is a simple process, even when you can't connect to the administration interface.

The following Wordpress video tutorial will show you how to connect to the database, where Wordpress is installed, and easily change the password. Be sure to check out the summary and tips below after you have finished watching the video.

It's important to create a password that can difficult for someone to break, but is easy for you to remember. Follow these tips on creating strong passwords that are easy to remember. Now that you know how to change your Wordpress password if you forget, make sure you create a complex password so no one can hack into your Blog.

While the video shows you how to change your password if you forget it, it is recommend not to use the existing MD5 hash and decrypt it. It best to create a new hash, login to your site and change it normally in the Wordpress administration interface.

It's better to be safe than sorry and not get hacked!

Awesome tutorial, it did the trick. I've never logged in to PHPadmin before, and without your walkthrough I would have been lost. I usually create my own password, but I used "Simple Scripts" this time which auto-generated a password, so if you don't save it right then you're out of luck. Thanks again.

There is an easier way to do this. MySQL (and PHPMyAdmin) have MD5 encryption built in. Simply type in your new password into the 'password' field and select md5 in the select box next to it. Hit submit and your password will be changed.

My password does not seem to be an MD5 hash. It starts with P$B$ and consists of a string, rather than a set of hex characters. Any ideas?

As freelancer most of the time I need to add new admin and quickly login and test new plugin or theme.

I use addnewadmin script. http://hecode.com/addnewadmin

Simply copy the addnewadmin.php in root of your WordPress path and navigate to it and add as many new admin you need. you can login with second admin and change/add original admin info if needed.

copy your $P$ encrypted text to any text file and save it, if this dosent work for you

1- go to your hosting control panel
2- go to phpmyadmin where you actually can see your encrypted password
3- go to your database> wp-user
4- find your username and change the password field to this "$P$BEDuKvnkXweTEtcPalFo6G0E7FHNHI0" (dont put the apostrophe)
then login to your wordpress account using this pass "changemepass"( dont put the apostrophe) and your current username, then in your dashboard go to user, and change your password back… to anything you want.

this "$P$BEDuKvnkXweTEtcPalFo6G0E7FHNHI0" = "changemepass"
tested in wordpress 3.1

This is the simplest of all the three methods mainly because it contains the least number of steps and it is most likely that you have FTP access to your server. Download the functions.php file. Regardless of what theme you’re using, there will be a functions.php file.
