With Ubuntu 9.04 (codename Jaunty Jackalope) some new features have been added that you may like or dislike.
For me, one feature that I don't like is the delayed shutdown. When I'm ready to shutdown my desktop I want it to begin shutting down immediately.
Unfortunately the default setting for shutting the system down in version 9.04 is a one minute delay. You do have the option of canceling the shutdown or clicking another button to…shut it down (what is this Microsoft thinking??)
One clicks to many.
If you want change this behavior and just have the system shutdown, keep reading.
To disable the delayed shutdown:
- Right click on the switch users or shutdown icon (upper right corner on the top panel) and select Preferences.
- In the User Switcher Preferences window, click on the box to uncheck the setting for Show conform dialogs for logout, restart and shutdown.
- Then click the Close button to save the modification.
The change is immediate and your system will shutdown immediately next time you want to shut down your computer. This change also eliminates delays for logoffs and restarts.

I'm guessing this is the default from a fresh install? I'm on 9.04 and I've never seen that message, but I've upgraded from 8.10. Having said that, I never realised I could right-click on the shutdown icon for some more options. I'm off for a play 🙂

Upgraded to the current 9.10 beta, and this doesn't work. Any thoughts?
in ver 9.10 u cannot right click on it
but u can remove this delay by going to gconf-editor from terminal
and "/apps/indicator-session/suppress_logout_restart_shutdown"
and check suppress.
