Stop Windows XP From Opening Second Window After Mapping Drive

2

winlogo.jpgOne of the most annoying things with Windows is mapping a drive to a share and having the share open in a separate window. Why? It makes no sense when you have Windows Explorer open to map the drive in the first place.

Fortunately there is an easy way to prevent the second window from opening on XP…

When mapping a drive, open Windows Explorer directly or by clicking on a shortcut to a folder. Before clicking the Finish button, hold down the Shift key, then click Finish. The drive will map to the share without opening a second window.

While this method works great on Windows 2000 and XP, it does not work on Vista. If you find a way of stopping the second window from opening on Vista, let us know about it!!

I was so glad to hear about this and was using this method for over a year. Unfortunately, the latest Windows patch to XP disabled this method. Is there a new way to prevent the window from opening. Microsoft keeps throwing pebbles into peoples shoes.

Apparently, some new patch in Windows XP Pro has disabled this method. I found this fix on your site a while ago. It certainly helped me avoid this annoying and unnecessary behavior of Windows Explorer, but I guess Microsoft found out and changed it back. Typical Microsoft thinking, always striving to be mediocre.
