Nice info BUT, you can't save any of these changes. Next time you start task manager you have to change everything to make the tool useful again. The default colume sorts the tool starts with are the most uncome layout anyone would need. Goes to show how little thought MS puts into there tools.

@Tom

If you are managing servers, there are many third party monitoring tools available (free or purchase) that does what you are looking for - monitor a system in the background that you can see past history of events. These tools also provide alerting capability and will notify you when there is a problem (by setting thresholds).

Windows also has a built in tool called Performance Monitor (go to Start \ Run and enter perfmon)that can also monitor and alert. For a quick guide to setting it up, check out Windows Performance Monitor.

Task Manager really is a front end GUI using performance monitor counters, but does not have any capability to record past events or alert.

Thanks for the info. Do you know of any software that can record the output of TM over time? It would be great to be able to see what was happening up to and through a problem that occurs. There are times when one of our servers seems to hang and by the time I try to look at things with TM it's too late; I can't get in until after the problem resolves itself.

Thanks again.
