Just browsing this old thread. If anyone is in the same hole, and can access their disk via a linux live or other OS:

Find the file boot.ini;
Find the [operating system] section, and the OS which is causing problems;
Add the switch /bootlog

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Enterprise" /bootlog

Hey!
So, i have a problem while booting windows vista home professional.
I try to boot it, and it says missing required file:BOOTVID.dll, i know how to download .dll files but how can i download it to computer if i can't boot it without it?! None of safe modes work, and acctually none of any modes work!

PLEASE HELP!

To access Properties of My Computer I have to be able to boot. If I could boot I wouldn't need the boot log.

So where does Safe Mode get the info that it loads?
I mean all the files it loads into memory,
like mup.sys and disk.sys and all the others?
Is it in a file somewhere on the HD?

You can go in Properties of My Computer to enable the Bootlog at the startup.

Doesn't help me. I can't enable boot logging without successfully booting, and I can't boot. And I can't access the recovery console because the manufacturer set it up with a password and won't disclose the password to me. They've consistently told me to just use the recovery disk, which will wipe all of my programs & data. I have backups of the data, but it will take ages to get all of the programs back on & all of the updates applied. I can still access the disk, by booting into Linux. Is there any way to enable boot logging by file-twiddling, without having to go into the recovery console?

I did what you said, but none of the user accounts still show up!

What should I try next? Safe Mode or Enable Boot Loggin didn't work. I can't even login!

so, it tooke me a while to figure out that you dont type in boot
instead it should read ntbtlog.txt
