Computer Video Guide: How To Install An IDE Hard Drive

With digital media files such as audio and video becoming the most common file type stored on most Computers, sooner or later you end up running out of disk space. One solution to the problem is to buy an external external USB Drive and off-load those mp3, avi, wmv and any other digital media files to the USB drive. But selecting which music or movies you can do without is easier said than done.

Instead of parting with your favorite music or movie to free up disk space, the best solution is to add a second hard drive to your Computer.

The video demonstrates how to add a hard drive to your Computer and gives you tips on how to set the jumper settings, where to connect IDE devices on an pre-junction cable, how to identify IDE ports on the motherboard, along with some other good information.

Installing a hard drive is something any Computer owner can do without spending a fortune or waiting on someone else to install it for you. Just remember these simple tips, and you will be on your way to downloading more of your favorite music and movies:

 - Remember to set the jumper settings to Cable Select (CS) which will tell the Computer to automatically determine if the drive will be set to a Master or Slave. Since you are adding a second drive, it will be set as a slave and initialize the new drive after the Master hard drive.

 - If you have a pre-junction cable, connect the second Hard drive to the middle IDE cable interface.

Good Luck!

Cable select only works if you have a "cable select" cable (with the tiny hole).

Many BIOS can boot drives in any order. You can't always rely on the drive's position on the cable to determine boot order.
